Pennsylvania Gastroenterology, Dermatology, and Rheumatology Societies Urge Regulatory Review of UPMC Health Plan Policy Affecting Patients with Chronic Immune-Mediated Diseases

Harrisburg, PA — June 2026 — The Pennsylvania Society of Gastroenterology (PSG) has formally called upon Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys to review UPMC Health Plan Policy RX.PA.403, citing concerns that the policy may create significant barriers to medically necessary treatment for patients living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

The request was submitted in a letter from PSG leadership including Ralph McKibbin, MD, FACP, FACG, AGAF (American College of Gastroenterology Pennsylvania West Governor), Joyann Kroser, MD (PSG Practive Management Committee Chair), PSG President Manish Thapar, MD, Vice President Neil Nandi, MD, and F. Wilson Jackson, III, MD (PSG Legislative Chair).

The initiative represents a collaborative effort among the Pennsylvania Society of Gastroenterology (PSG), the Pennsylvania Academy of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery (PAD), and the Pennsylvania Rheumatology Society (PRS), with support from the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG). The organizations share concerns regarding the impact of increasingly restrictive utilization management policies on patients with chronic immune-mediated diseases.
